Day Trip – Sydney to Canberra – By Car or By Bus?

If you are visiting Australia and would like to take some time to visit places other than your original destination, you have to be very careful when it comes to planning your trip. Don’t forget that it’s a vast country and that some distances should be covered by plane, which means you’ll need to get your tickets well in advance if you don’t want to splash out a lot of cash for a last-minute deal.

Let’s presume you are going to Sydney, because it’s by far the most popular place down under. While Sydney deserves at least several days of your holiday, it would be even better if you could visit some other attractive locations in this beautiful country, without having to spend ages travelling. One of the most popular day trips from Sydney is to Canberra. But what’s the best way of getting there?

Option 1 – Bus

All those who choose to travel around Australia by coach or bus can expect reliable, comfortable and reasonably priced service. Air-conditioning, adjustable seats and Wi-Fi included in the price of the ticket are just some of the reasons why you might consider this option. Also, if you are a solo traveller, you may wish to get some rest while travelling, instead of obsessing about finding the right vehicle and not missing a turn, for example.

The national coach operator, Greyhound, offers Hop-on Hop-off passes for popular routes, so you might want to take this advantage of travelling with them. There are buses leaving Sydney Central Station throughout the day, just make sure you use the “early bird” discount for the best price.

Option 2 – Car

Tourists travelling with family or friends should definitely look into the option of renting a car for this trip. It usually takes around four hours to get to your destination, but you have the freedom to make stops whenever you feel like it or even extend this relatively short journey to enjoy some great scenery and food along the way.

First, you need to choose a car which would provide a comfortable ride for everyone involved. The most popular option right now is definitely an SUV, since you get a lot of room for all the passengers and you can have a look here to choose from a range of different models and sizes.

The route

This is one of the best routes if you wish to travel around Australia. The so-called Remembrance Drive will take you through some of the most amazing avenues of trees, planted in memory of Australian soldiers who lost their lives all over the world.

Don’t forget the music

All modern cars will allow you to play your favourite playlists, so don’t forget to plug in! Though it’s not a very long drive, if you want the best possible experience, why not combine the right music and some of the most amazing scenery that Australia has to offer?

Some people try to squeeze in as much as possible into the limited number of days on holiday, but that can be counterproductive. On the other hand, if you take it easy and enjoy your time without having to worry about too many things, you’ll definitely feel more relaxed and ready to absorb everything that Australia has to offer. And that is a lot.

There are nine rest stops with toilets, so you needn’t worry about that. You can find out more by visiting the RMS Online Interactive Rest Area map. This resource is particularly valuable if you’re travelling with kids, since you never know when they might need a toilet break.

On the other hand, when it comes to lunch and coffee breaks, the towns in the picturesque Southern Highlands are highly recommended. You can also find stops with playgrounds to give your kids a chance to have some fun. You might even want to spend a night somewhere along the route and meet the locals and sample some of the great food offered by many restaurants. It’s always a good idea to go for locally grown food and delicacies, since you’re guaranteed to get the best value for money.
