Is Montenegro Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Montenegro generally offers a safe environment for solo female travelers, with friendly locals and well-established tourist infrastructure. However, like any place in the world, it is advised to maintain alertness, especially during late hours. Basic precautions like not walking alone in desolate areas and securing your belongings can help ensure a smooth experience. It's also worth mentioning that few locals might not speak fluent English so learning a bit of local language might come handy.

How safe is Montenegro?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Montenegro is generally safe to travel at night, especially in tourist areas. However, as with any location, it's wise to stay alert to your surroundings. Stick to well-lit, populated areas and avoid isolated places. Local people are friendly, but caution should always be practiced. Immediate assistance can be availed through local authorities in case of emergency.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Montenegro is generally quite safe with little instances of petty crime. Buses are the most common form of public transport and are well-maintained. However, it's always essential to be aware of your belongings and surroundings, especially during peak hours or in crowded areas. Taxis are also a recommended mode of transport for practicality and safety reasons. Remember to choose registered taxis to avoid potential scams.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Montenegro, street harassment is not a common phenomenon. Mostly, locals are respectful and hospitable towards visitors. However, like anywhere else in the world, it is advisable to stay cautious. It could occasionally happen, typically in busier areas or during late-night hours. It is recommended to keep personal belongings secure and avoid deserted areas at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

When it comes to petty crimes in Montenegro, risks are relatively low. Pickpocketing or purse-snatching can occasionally happen in crowded public places or on public transport, particularly in peak tourist season. Unfortunately, such instances, although rare, do occur and tourists can be targeted. So, it's advised to safeguard your belongings and not leave your items unattended. However, overall, Montenegro is a safe country to travel around. As a solo female traveler, always be vigilant and use common sense for your own security and safety.
Tap water:

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in most parts of Montenegro is relatively safe to drink. The water is regularly checked for safety and quality. However, in some rural areas or less developed regions, bottled water may be advisable due to possible inconsistencies in water treatment processes.

Solo travel experience

Montenegro is stunning and still even more wild. There are no crowds (even in the most popular city, Kotor, it is manageable). Hotels, restaurants and tours are really affordable, much cheaper than in Croatia. The coastline is mainly rocky, but the water is beautiful. Amazing views, safety and incredible food. However, in terms of nightlife, I felt disappointed.

Solo travel experience

I have been to Montenegro several times, it's very safe there, and the locals are very helpful. I liked Kotor, Perast and Tivat. I didn't enjoy Budva and Bar (a bit dirty and too touristy). Also, Podgorica is nothing special, the seaside towns are much prettier.

Solo travel experience

Montenegro is absolutely safe. Everyone is very nice. I sailed a boat and got off every evening when we moored. I had the most fun in this bar in Herceg Novi, where everyone sits on the wall. Many local people. Everyone speaks English.

Solo travel experience

Montenegro stole my heart and I didn't want to leave. I spent 3 days, splitting time between Budva, Kotor, and Perast. Budva wins everything. It was breathtaking and I enjoyed every moment spent there. Kotor was fine, and Perast was also great and peaceful.

Solo travel experience

Kotor was absolutely my favorite place, it literally swept me off my feet. I visited Zagreb, Split, Herceg Novi (it wasn't my favorite place, very beautiful, but not much to do), Kotor and Budva - I regret not skipping Budva and spending more time in Kotor, because I liked it so much there.
